The Gilgal Gardens, Salt Lake City

Sculptured head and arm

A decapitated head and arm illustrate a biblical scene.

The Gilgal Gardens are a folk art/untrained artist project in Salt Lake City. It is considered the only “visionary art environment” in Utah, and it holds a place in the pantheon of outsider art and craft Americana. Hidden away in a neighborhood mere blocks from our apartment, my wife and I visited last fall to shoot photographs and video of the unique space. Here is a still image. I’m cleaning some of these up in Photoshop and will post periodically. A driving force behind the garden for sculptor Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. was the pressing question, “Can I create a sanctuary in my yard that will shut out fear and keep one’s mind young and alert to the last, no matter how perilous the times?” Learn more about the garden at http://gilgalgarden.org/about-gilgal-sculpture-garden/
